Rivers are natural flowing bodies of freshwater that move from higher elevations to lower areas under the force of gravity. In the middle and lower courses, rivers develop meanders, oxbow lakes, floodplains, levees, and deltas as they slow down and deposit sediments. Rivers also support rich biodiversity. Freshwater ecosystems are home to countless species of fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles, mammals, and aquatic plants.
